The M. E. S. College of Arts & Commerce in association with the Directorate of Higher Education and NSS of the college organized a talk to commemorate the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations to mark 75 years of Independence on 13th of August, in the M. S. Kamat Seminar Hall of the college premises.
The talk titled, The Women Pioneers in the Struggle for Freedom in India was presented by Dr. S. Susan Deborah, Assistant Professor and Teacher in-charge, Dept. of English. The talk deliberated on the role of women who were fighting the British on equal par with the men. The five women who were chosen for the talk were, Begum Hazrat Mahal, also known as Begum of Awadh, Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, Madam Cama, Sarojini Naidu, Kamala Nehru and Vijayalakshmi Pandit. The talk illustrated how history often fails to acknowledge the role of women who were equally responsible for their courage in the struggle for freedom.
