NSS at MES
National Service Scheme (NSS) is a social service program for youth undergoing higher education in India. NSS was started in 1969 at the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi. It is sponsored by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of India which is aimed at developing student’s personality through community service. The motto of NSS is ‘Not me but you’ which encourages the volunteers to do selfless social service.
The program aims to instill the idea of social welfare in students, and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone who is needy gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. In doing so, volunteers learn from people in villages how to lead a good life despite a scarcity of resources. It also provides help in natural and man-made disasters by providing food, clothing and first aid to the disaster’s victims.
NSS Unit of MES College is one of the oldest and a vibrant entity in the college with an allotted strength of 6 units comprising 600 NSS volunteers and 6 program officers, including one program officer in charge. Presently Assistant Professor Dattaprasad Shirgurkar is the NSS PO in charge.
NSS conducts a variety of activities including cleaning and beautification of the college campus, watershed management work, anti-plastic drive, blood donation camp, personality development programs, civil, social and political awareness among students as well as society.
Every year NSS unit conducts a 7 days residential Annual Special Camp in the rural area to make the student volunteers aware about the village life. This year NSS Camp was organized in Morpirla village of Quepem taluka. NSS volunteers are involved in a variety of activities during camp like cleaning, socio-economic survey; water shed management, cleaning of water bodies, de-silting of ponds and streams, revival of various water bodies, construction of check dams, medical camp and distribution of cloth bags which is appreciated by the local authorities and villagers.
The college has adopted the Sancoale village in Mormugao taluka under NSS and is striving to bring out positive socio-economic change by conducting a variety of activities for all the age groups in village. The volunteer who manages to complete requisite number of hours in NSS activity including NSS Annual Special Camp is eligible for entitlement marks in every semester.
